I don't know if I would ever read a novel about a famous historical figure. I've never even read a book like that. The protagonists of the historical novels read were all ordinary people. Maybe because it's easier for me, the reader, to empathize with them? Perhaps. Thinking about it, there are some well-known characters who intrigue me, like Pietro Micca (whom most of you, I bet, have never heard of), or Muzio Scevola (a character I loved in my early elementary school years), but I don't it is interesting, for example, to read the fictionalized story of some king, politician or nobleman. I prefer the common man , unknown people, as we could be, dealing with their historical period.
Kings and politicians have always had an easy life, so I don't find pleasure in reading about them. But it has always been torture for people to face life in the various eras of our planet. Common stories in a historical setting And here we continue the discussion on the common man, but it is a discussion that is linked to the first one we made, on the passion for the Special Data historical setting . I really like the Middle Ages, so reading the story of a man or family who lived at that time excites me. It is clear that references to the politics of the time cannot be missing, because it influences the lives of the characters and because it is precisely politics that makes history. But seeing everything from the point of view of those who suffer politics , of those who suffer the power of rulers, certainly generates more empathy. I therefore cannot help but think back to World Without End , which fascinated me for precisely these reasons.
The feeling of going back in time Reading for me is escaping from my reality. It may be as trivial as you like, but it's the main reason I read. A historical novel allows me to travel through time, it is the only way I have to learn about eras that I will never be able to see in person. An essay informs, but a novel throws you back in time , makes you experience history, makes you participate in those lives, in those events. Reading historical novels for me is a way to learn more about past eras. Of course, the narrator, the author, must be able to make me feel these sensations. For me it represents a strength of the historical novel, but it is a strength that is hidden not only in the plot, but also in the author's style, in his narration, in his ability to make me relive those times.
